How to Renew a Car's Plates That You Store

With this world as technologically advanced as it is, the SOS has stepped up what they are doing in regards to cross-checking for active insurance on a vehicle you are trying to renew plates for. The SOS can now check with your insurance company on whether you have active insurance on a specific car or not. If you are one of us unfortunate individuals that has a winter birthday and also have a car you store through the winter, you have a couple options to avoid the State rescinding your tabs:
  1. Renew in advance. You can do so up to 6 months ahead of time and don't lose out on time you have paid for and they verify your car has current coverage.
  2. Pay a $10 late fee. As soon as the car comes out of storage and is back on insurance, you can just pay the small penalty.

Keep in mind, some carriers require you to keep coverage on your car after pulling it out of "storage/comp only" for 30 days, so adding liability back for 3 days may not be acceptable. This is a conversation you should have with your agent!
